The 89th Major League Baseball All-Star Game takes place at Nationals Park on Tuesday, July 17, as the American League and National League rosters come together to showcase their talent on a national stage.

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer was named the NL starter for the second consecutive year, while Boston Red Sox southpaw Chris Sale was tabbed with starting duties for the AL for the third consecutive Midsummer Classic.

Los Angeles Dodgers and NL skipper Dave Roberts opted for the home crowd favorite in Scherzer after a dominating first half performance in which he went 12-5 with a 2.41 ERA, 2.80 FIP and 0.90 WHIP over 134.2 innings pitched.

Sale, who will oppose Scherzer for the second year in a row, enjoyed similar success as he compiled a 10-4 record with a league-best 2.23 ERA, 2.17 FIP and 0.90 WHIP across 129 innings pitched.

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jesús Aguilar earned the final spot on the NL roster with the help of over 20 million votes, while Jean Segura of the Seattle Mariners took home honors for the AL.

Aguilar bested the likes of Dodgers infielder Max Muncy, San Francisco Giants’ first baseman Brandon Belt, Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Nationals’ Trea Turner to earn his first trip to the All-Star Game.

Segura drew nearly 14 million votes to finish ahead of the Boston Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi, the Minnesota Twins’ Eddie Rosario, the New York Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

The AL had a total of six replacements. Cleveland Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer takes the spot of Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander, who pitched on Sunday.

Also added to the game were pitchers Charlie Morton and Blake Snell, as well as infielder Jed Lowrie and catchers Salvador Perez and Yan Gomes, who fill the injury voids of Aroldis Chapman, Corey Kluber, Wilson Ramos and Gleyber Torres.

Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling will participate in his first All-Star game, replacing Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas, who is ineligible to participate after pitching on Sunday.

Likewise, Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Greinke takes over for Chicago Cubs ace Jon Lester, who also pitched on Sunday. The NL features two other fill-ins, as Yadier Molina and Jeremy Jeffress respectively crack the roster for the injured Buster Posey and Sean Doolittle.
