Playing without Corey Seager, the 2016 National League Rookie of the Year and arguably their top position player, the Los Angeles Dodgers eliminated the Chicago Cubs in five games in the NL Championship Series.

In doing so, the Dodgers secured their first berth in the World Series since 1988. Now locked in to next play on Tuesday, Seager is likely to be added to the playoff roster. “We expect to have him back for Game 1,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after his club won the NL pennant.

“He’s doing everything he can to get healthy.” Seager suffered a lower back sprain on a slide into second base during Game 3 of the NLDS. He received an epidural injection and daily treatment last week in effort to remain active for the NLCS.

Seager did not travel with the team to Chicago and it wasn’t until Tuesday that he began working out. Playing catch, running in a straight line and hitting off a tee followed.

Among those expected to join Seager on the field for the start of the World Series is Clayton Kershaw. “We can assure you Clayton will be starting Game 1,” Roberts said. “After that we’ll kind of talk through things as far as how we figure out the rest of the rotation.”

Kershaw pitched six efficient innings against the Cubs to earn a win in the series-clinching game. He didn’t allow a hit until one out in the fourth inning — a Kris Bryant solo home run — and only permitted three hits on the night.

Kershaw is now 2-0 with a 3.63 ERA in the postseason. He’s surrendered at least one home run in each of his three outings, and has allowed six total home runs in 17.1 innings pitched.
