Tommy Edman And Mookie Betts Combined To Help Dodgers Make MLB History

3 Min Read

The Los Angeles Dodgers closed out last week on a high note by sweeping the Washington Nationals to take all six head-to-head meetings this season.

But that’s not to suggest the weekend was without any drama, as the Dodgers needed late rallies on Saturday and Sunday to keep their winning streak alive. Tommy Edman and Mookie Betts each provided a big swing over the two nights, and in doing so helped the Dodgers make MLB history.

According to OPTA Stats, the Dodgers became the first team to hit multiple game-winning, three-run home runs with two outs in the seventh inning or later over back-to-back games.

The Dodgers sweeping the Nationals came on the heels of Teoscar Hernández providing a walk-off double to prevent the St. Louis Cardinals from winning all three games at Dodger Stadium.

Hernández, Edman and Betts have each seen recent improvement at the plate. Some of their production came while Shohei Ohtani missed four games in a row because of left knee, right bicep and neck trouble.

Tommy Edman’s home run

Edman’s three-run homer in the seventh inning on Saturday gave the Dodgers a lead and came after he made an impressive catch at the wall in left-center field. Though, he downplayed playing the role of hero.

“I’m just excited we got the win. Good, hard-fought win. A lot of intense moments in that game, a lot of big moments from a lot of guys,” Edman said. “Anything we can do to win ballgames is especially important in this part of the year.”

Mookie Betts’ home run

Betts’ homer in the eighth inning on Sunday not only put the Dodgers ahead but extended his on-base streak to 16 games. Betts is batting .323/.413/.538 with five doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI during that span.

He’s attributed the success to past experiences with needing to overcome struggles and maintain a positive mindset.

The comeback win was the Dodgers’ 41st of the season. That’s second behind only the Arizona Diamondbacks (43) for most comeback wins this year.
