On July 19, 2022, the annual MLB All-Star Game was played at Dodger Stadium for only the second time ever and the Los Angeles Dodgers hosting marked a first in 42 years.
The Dodgers were originally due to host the All-Star Game in 2020, but that never came to be due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With the 2021 event already set to take place in Atlanta before ultimately being moved to Denver, MLB named Dodger Stadium as the site of the 2022 Midsummer Classic.
The logo for the 2022 All-Star Game drew inspiration from Hollywood and the Dodger Stadium design. Players also donned a gold-accented look rather than wear their usual road or home jersey.
The Dodgers tied a Los Angeles franchise record with six All-Star Game representatives that year in Tyler Anderson, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Tony Gonsolin, Clayton Kershaw and Trea Turner.
How Dodgers did in 2022 MLB All-Star Game
Kershaw threw a 17-pitch first inning in what marked the only All-Star Game start of his illustrious career. He erased Shohei Ohtani’s leadoff single by picking him off first base before working around a walk to complete a scoreless frame.
After coming out of the game, Kershaw admitted to allowing himself to take a step back and soak in the environment.
Betts, who started in center field, gave the National League a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that scored Ronald Acuña Jr. It was Betts’ only at-bat prior to being replaced by Juan Soto.
Turner started at shortstop and went 1-for-2 prior to be removed for Dansby Swanson.
Meanwhile, Gonsolin struggled in his All-Star Game debut as he gave up a game-tying two-run homer to Giancarlo Stanton in the fourth inning. The home run earned Stanton the MVP award in his return to Southern California.
That was followed by Byron Buxton hitting a solo homer to give the American League a 3-2 lead, which held as the final score. Gonsolin, who took the loss, finished his day giving up the three runs on four hits with one strikeout.
Freeman entered in the third inning as a replacement for Paul Goldschmidt and grounded out in his only at-bat. Anderson did not pitch in the game, which was his first career All-Star selection.
