The Los Angeles Dodgers squandered opportunities and suffered a 9-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners in their second night game at Camelback Ranch.
They loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning but only managed to score one run when Matt Beaty grounded into a double play. Their 1-0 lead was quickly erased as Ross Stripling surrendered a solo home run to Jake Fraley with one out in the third.
It was the lone run Stripling allowed as he pitched through traffic and collected three strikeouts over three innings. Dennis Santana spun multiple impressive breaking balls in the fourth to strand a two-out triple and set the stage for the Dodgers to again pull ahead.
Corey Seager hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth and after Gavin Lux kept the inning alive with a walk, Anthony Garcia delivered a two-run double.
But like earlier in the game, the Dodgers’ lead was short-lived. A pair of singles and sacrifice fly off Kyle Lobstein pulled the Mariners even in the fifth inning.
Seattle pulled away for good in the seventh, beginning with Dee Gordon hitting a leadoff double. An error left two on with nobody out and though Reymin Guadan nearly worked his way out of the jam, he walked Daniel Vogelbach and that set the table for Kyle Lewis’ grand slam.
Jose Marmolejos and Chris Marsical each provided insurance for the Mariners with an RBI double in the ninth inning.
The Dodgers failed to have a runner reach over the final three innings.
