Dustin May started the Los Angeles Dodgers final Cactus League game against the Kansas City Royals and ran into some trouble, but was ultimately solid during his last outing in Arizona.
May opened with two scoreless innings, but things fell apart a bit in the third. Michael Busch made an error that allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base, and that was followed by a bunt single before Bobby Witt Jr. took advantage and blasted a three-run homer to left field.
The Dodgers rallied in the bottom of the third inning when Jason Heyward singled and James Outman doubled. Heyward then scored on a wild pitch before Steven Duggar singled to drive in Outman, making the score 3-2.
In the fourth inning, Franmil Reyes and Matt Duffy doubled to bring in another run for the Royals, but May was able to limit the damage to one.
May pitched into the sixth inning and recorded two outs before his day ended at 83 pitches, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Tayler Scott pitched in relief of May, throwing one inning, before Andre Jackson entered with two outs in the seventh and a runner on third.
Jackson made the Opening Day roster for the first time in his career, so the outing was more of a tune-up than looking to prove what he can do.
The runner came into score when Jackson threw a wild pitch, which could have easily been scored a passed ball, to put the Royals up 5-2. The run was charged to Scott.
Busch hit his second extra-base hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run, which cut the deficit to 5-3. Yonny Hernández then followed with a bunt single to put the tying run at the plate, but the Dodgers followed with three straight outs.
Jackson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings before he allowed a leadoff homer in the ninth to put the Royals up 6-3. He closed out his day throwing 2.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Dodgers head back to Los Angeles for final exhibitions
With their game against the Royals now over, that concludes the Dodgers Spring Training schedule in Arizona. They will now return home for their annual exhibition Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels at Dodger Stadium on Sunday and Angel Stadium the following two days.
Wednesday will be an off day for the Dodgers before Opening Day against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday at Dodger Stadium.
