Recap: Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts Deliver Dodgers Win Over Royals

3 Min Read

The Los Angeles Dodgers remained undefeated on their road trip and have won five games in a row by defeating the Kansas City Royals in the series opener at Kauffman Stadium.

Shohei Ohtani finished tied for the game lead with two RBI in the Dodgers’ 5-4 win. Bobby Witt Jr., who committed to Team USA for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, also drove in two runs.

Ohtani provided an early spark for the Dodgers with a leadoff home run in the first inning and he later added a game-tying RBI triple.

The Dodgers also received contributions from Max Muncy in the form of a two-run homer, and Mookie Betts’ RBI single in the fifth inning put them ahead for good.

Dustin May was removed from the game after completing just four innings. It marked May’s first time in 15 starts this season in which he did not pitch at least five innings.

May wasn’t overly sharp but subpar defense also didn’t do him any favors.

In the bottom of the first inning, Kiké Hernández airmailed a throw to home plate that allowed a runner to score. Had Hernández been more accurate from left field, he likely would have thrown out Maikel Garcia, who ran through a stop sign.

Then in the second inning, a Teoscar Hernández misplay in right field allowed a line drive go over his head for an RBI double. Two batters, later Witt connected on a home run that gave the Royals a 3-2 lead.

May stranded two runners in the fourth to end his outing on a positive note.

The Royals loaded the bases against Tanner Scott in the ninth before he converted his 18th save of the season. The appearance was Scott’s third in the last four days. Scott was bailed out by Freddie Freeman picking a low throw from Betts to complete a game-winning double play.

Dodgers’ record in Interleague games

The Dodgers are now 12-7 against the American League so far this season. They are 115-56 in Interleague games since 2020, which is the best record in the Majors.

Friday marked the start of playing nine consecutive games against AL opponents.
