The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped their series against the Philadelphia Phillies after losing the rubber match 9-4 due to Kyle Schwarber and a controversial call in the sixth inning.
With the Dodgers leading 4-3 entering the inning, Alec Bohm started the Phillies off with a double. Brandon Marsh then laid down a bunt that was fielded by Kiké Hernández and thrown to Miguel Rojas, who was covering third base.
Both Rojas and the ball beat Bohm to the bag, and he was clearly out at third. However, third base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ruled that Rojas had obstructed Bohm from reaching the base safeley.
Bohm’s foot slightly collided with Rojas’ foot, but it was not enough to slow or stop his slide, and he would have been out regardless. Despite that, Wendelstedt called the runner safe.
Both Rojas and Dave Roberts argued the call, but it was not reviewable and led to the Dodgers manager being tossed from a game for the first time this season. It was the 12th time of his career that Roberts has been thrown out of a game.
Acting manager Danny Lehmann opted to bring in Joe Kelly with runners at the corners, and things fell apart from there. J.T. Realmuto immediately tied the game with a ground out, and after a pair of walks, a run came around to score on a wild pitch.
Schwarber then broke the game open with a three-run homer to make it 8-4 Phillies. It was Schwabrer’s second homer of the game after he hit a leadoff home run against Gavin Stone to open the game.
In the fifth, Schwarber also roped an RBI double, and in the ninth, he homered for the third time. He finished the night with seven runs driven in.
Prior to that point, Freddie Freeman drove in three runs for the Dodgers, one in the first inning and two in the second, both on singles. Rojas also singled home a run in the first inning, his first at-bat back off the injured list.
It continued a recent trend of the Dodgers scoring early, but being unable to add on in the later innings.
Gavin Stone’s struggles continue for Dodgers
Stone has struggled as of late, coming into the game with an ERA over seven in his last five starts, and that didn’t change much in this one. He was unable to make it through five innings, tossing 4.2 with three runs allowed. He struck out just two hitters and walked one.
His season ERA now sits at 3.71, amd he has a 5.20 ERA in his last seven games.
