The Los Angeles Dodgers bounced back from having their seven-game winning streak snapped by remaining undefeated against the Miami Marlins this season with a 7-4 victory.
Sandy Alcantara initially was improved in a second consecutive start against the Dodgers, but he ultimately encountered plenty of trouble.
Teoscar Hernández gave the Dodgers a lead in the first inning when his ball to the gap went off Kyle Stowers’ glove for an RBI double. Unfortunately for Hernández and the Dodgers, he later was removed from the game because of left hamstring tightness.
Freddie Freeman then added onto his long history of success against the Marlins and extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run homer in the third inning that put the Dodgers up 3-0. The home run was Freeman’s 350th of his career and 41st he’s ever hit against the Marlins.
That’s tied with Ryan Howard and Ryan Zimmerman for most home runs in a career against the Marlins.
Alcantara ran into more trouble in the fifth inning as Shohei Ohtani lined a two-run home run out to right field. Ohtani’s home run had a 117.9 mph exit velocity, which marked the hardest hit in baseball so far this season.
Ohtani’s homer also came after Hyeseong Kim collected the first hit of his career and added a stolen base to boot. Kim went 2-for-4 with one RBI in his first start since being recalled over the weekend.
Michael Conforto ended an 0-for-31 drought with a single in the sixth inning that put two on for Kim, who drove in the first run of his career.
Chris Taylor added an RBI double in the seventh inning.
Dodgers pitching
Jack Dreyer started for the second time this season and pitched 1.1 innings in the opener role. He was followed by Ben Casparius taking on bulk innings and getting the game to the fifth.
Casparius allowed one run on five hits and two walks. He finished with five strikeouts over four innings of work.
Alex Vesia, Evan Phillips, Yoendrys Gómez, Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates also pitched for the Dodgers. Gómez surrendered a three-run homer in the eighth inning that prompted Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to call on Scott in what once was a comfortable game.
The save was Yates’ first of the season.
Tony Gonsolin is scheduled to start Tuesday and the Dodgers have another bullpen game planned for the series finale at loanDepot Park.
