The Los Angeles Dodgers endured some bumps along the way but navigated another bullpen game and remained undefeated in four matchups with the San Francisco Giants this season behind a 4-3 victory at Dodger Stadium.
David Price made a second start this year and helped get the Dodgers off on the right foot by retiring all eight batters faced. Price collected five strikeouts as the opener and had a light-hearted conversation with teammates and manager Dave Roberts before walking off the mound.
It can be presumed that may have been about Price’s spot in the Dodgers lineup being due up second in the bottom half of the inning. Opportunities to bat are what Price has said he greatly misses with not being a starter.
The bottom of the third wound up seeing the Dodgers start a two-out rally on Mookie Betts’ triple off the wall in center field. Justin Turner followed with a home run, his second in the past three games.
After the Giants cut their deficit in half, DJ Peters got it back in the fifth inning with his first career homer. San Francisco pulled even in the top of the sixth on Donovan Solano’s two-run homer, but the slugfest continued.
In what wound up being his final inning of the night, Alex Wood surrendered a leadoff homer to Max Muncy in the bottom of the sixth. The solo shot wound up proving to be the difference in the game, and amounted to Wood suffering a second loss this season — with both coming to the Dodgers.
Dodgers bullpen shuts door
While the bullpen squandered a lead in the middle innings, Nate Jones, Blake Treinen and Kenley Jansen ensured there would not be a repeat.
Jones replaced Victor Gonzalez to get the final two outs of the seventh, Treinen worked a clean eighth and Jansen set the Giants down in order in the ninth for his 12th save of the season.
