The Los Angeles Dodgers stormed out to a comfortable lead and pulled away late for a 9-5 win over the San Francisco Giants.
After the home team had won each of the first nine games of the head-to-head series between the two rivals, the Dodgers have now notched back-to-back victories at Oracle Park. Overall, the Dodgers have won six in a row against the Giants.
The Dodgers took their lead with some help from Alex Wood and sloppy Giants defense in the second inning. After Wood’s errant pickoff throw, Gavin Lux hit an RBI single and moved into scoring position on Austin Slater’s error.
Wood hit Austin Barnes with a pitch to load the bases, then traded a run for an out on Cody Bellinger’s sacrifice fly. Mookie Betts followed that with an RBI single and Trea Turner gave the Dodgers a second sac fly of the inning.
The Dodgers scored one run in both the third and fourth innings, with Betts providing a home run during that span. Their scoring then stopped until the eighth inning, when a barrage of two-out extra-base hits from Lux, Austin Barnes, Cody Bellinger and Betts amounted to three runs.
That broke the game open 9-5 in favor of the Dodgers after the Giants had fought back to within a run.
All of Tyler Anderson’s trouble came in the fourth inning as he was hurt by soft contact. Consecutive hits by Luis González and David Villar plated two runs, and a third came in on Anderson’s wild pitch. The game continued to spiral as Joey Bart hit a two-run homer.
Anderson wound up allowing another single before managing to get through the inning with the Dodgers clinging to a lead. A perfect fifth inning was followed by back-to-back walks to start the sixth, which marked the end of Anderson’s night.
Evan Phillips was greeted with a single that loaded the bases, but he worked through the jam without allowing a run. That was the only baserunner the Dodgers bullpen allowed over four scoreless innings.
Dodgers mourn Vin Scully
During Tuesday’s game, the Dodgers announced Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully passed away at 94 years old.
Scully’s final game in the broadcast booth came at Oracle Park.
