After back-to-back sweeps, the Los Angeles Dodgers began a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves, looking to set a season-high seven-game winning streak, but they were unable to do so.
This is an important three-game set at Truist Park as the two battle for the No. 2 seed in the National League playoff race. Both teams sit just behind the Brewers, with the Dodgers one game back and the Braves five behind.
The Braves took two of three from the Dodgers in Los Angeles earlier this season, from May 8-10. L.A. has won eight of its last 14 games at Truist Park, dating back to the 2022 season, including two of three last year.
Dodgers 3, Braves 3: key takeaways
Tyler Glasnow returns
Glasnow was back on the mound for the first time since May 6, when he left a start against the Houston Astros in the second inning with lower back spasms. The Dodgers activated Glasnow from the 60-day injured list before the game.
The first inning was a struggle for Glasnow. He allowed four singles to the first five batters he faced, which scored two runs for Atlanta. He then gave up a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Glasnow dealt with some unlucky outcomes that inning, and Freddie Freeman should have made a play on one of the balls that went for a hit. But despite giving up the hits, Glasnow didn’t give up much hard contact and with slightly better luck, he could have easily pitched a scoreless inning.
Instead, he threw 35 pitches to finish off the three-run inning. That limited his total innings for the game, but he locked in after that.
Glasnow struck out the side in the third inning and pitched four consecutive innings without allowing another run to score.
He finished his outing allowing three runs on six hits over five innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Even with that first inning, Glasnow looked excellent and turned in a solid outing for his first start off the IL.
Top of Dodgers lineup struggles
The top of the Dodgers lineup had a difficult day, and instead it was the bottom of the lineup that stepped up.
Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and Max Muncy went a combined 3-for-19 with just two singles. Alex Call and Hunter Feduccia each picked up two hits and drove in runs, while Alek Thomas had another RBI single.
Thomas drove in their first run after singles from Muncy and Kyle Tucker. Thomas has made three starts for the Dodgers and has an RBI single in each game.
Feduccia followed with his RBI single to make it a 3-2 game in the second inning.
The Dodgers tied the game in the fourth inning when Tommy Edman singled, stole second base and scored on Call’s single. From there, they couldn’t get much of anything going.
In the ninth inning, trailing by one, Ohtani hit a leadoff triple, but Freeman struck out, Betts grounded out to shortstop, Muncy was intentionally walked, and Edman flied out to center field to strand him at third.
They left 11 runners on base and went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Braves take late lead
Tanner Scott took over with a tie game in the eighth inning, but allowed a leadoff double. After recording the next two outs, Scott allowed a single to Ozzie Albies to put Atlanta up, 4-3.
Before that, the Dodgers had scoreless appearances from Alex Vesia, Jack Dreyer and Evan Phillips.
