The Los Angeles Dodgers bucked a trend by not playing from behind for the first time since July 7 and shut out the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0, to take the three-game series at Busch Stadium.
Tyler Anderson avoided the two-out pitfalls that that Mitch White and Tony Gonsolin couldn’t avoid, and he also solved Andrew Knizner to get through six scoreless innings. Anderson held the Cardinals to five baserunners (three hits and two walks).
He was aided in the sixth inning by Mookie Betts making a running catch in the gap and then throwing out Dylan Carlson on his attempt to stretch a single into a double. Max Muncy also made a nice defensive play by snagging a sinking line drive to help Anderson retire the side in order.
Anderson keeping the Cardinals off the board provided the Dodgers with ample opportunities to break through against Dakota Hudson. Freddie Freeman sparked the offense with a one-out double in the fourth inning and after Will Smith was hit by pitch, Justin Turner’s RBI single broke the scoreless tie.
Smith then extended his streak to six consecutive games with an RBI when his double in the sixth inning scored Trea Turner from first base. Gavin Lux added a two-run homer in the seventh to provide the Dodgers’ bullpen with some breathing room.
No Dodgers in Home Run Derby
Corey Seager was announced as the eighth and final participant for the 2022 Home Run Derby at Dodger Stadium. The addition came shortly after Seager was named to the All-Star Game as an injury replacement for Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer.
With the Home Run Derby field set, the Dodgers officially will not have a participant. Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner weren’t interested in participating, and Will Smith indicated he would need to first be added to the All-Star Game.
This marks the first time since 2012 that a player from the host city is not taking part in the Derby.
