The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Julio Urías was ranked 10th by MLB Network’s The Shredder for the top starting pitchers heading into the 2023 season. It represents Urías first time in his career appearing on The Shredder rankings.
While future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw was regarded within The Shredder’s “just missed” category, Urías’ nod comes after putting together a strong 17-win season, including an incomprehensible second half which featured a 1.26 ERA in 78.1 innings pitched leading to a 9-1 record across the stretch.
Despite making The Shredder’s rankings of the Top-10 Starting Pitchers Right Now for 2023, Urías was left out of all three analysts’ (Mike Petriello, Sarah Langs, Vince Gennaro) lists.
Deemed as the best pitcher in baseball for 2023 by The Shredder, Milwaukee Brewers ace and 2021 National League Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes took home the first place ranking. The 28-year-old carried a 2.94 ERA across 202 innings of work while striking out an NL-leading 243 batters.
Turning 40 years old later this month, freshly-inked New York Met Justin Verlander was ranked second by The Shredder after capturing his wildly impressive third Cy Young Award in 2022, just one year after Tommy John surgery. In addition to helping lead the Houston Astros to a World Series title, Verlander carried an MLB-best 1.75 era across the season to the tune of an 18-4 record and 0.82 WHIP.
Ranked third is the newest member of the New York Yankees pitching rotation, Carlos Rodón. While setting a career-high in innings pitched at 178, the left-hander also captured an impressive 2.88 ERA in 31 starts with a 1.03 WHIP.
The Shredder ranked the Mets’ Max Scherzer fourth, and he was followed by Miami Marlins ace and 2022 NL Cy Young Sandy Alcantara, Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani, Atlanta Braves’ Max Fried, Philadelphia Phillies’ Zack Wheeler and Texas Rangers’ Jacob deGrom before Urías rounded out the top 10.
In a season that saw the 26-year-old Mexico native finish as a finalist in NL Cy Young Award voting (third place) after posting a 2.16 era on the year, Urías continues to make formidable strides to becoming one of the most impactful pitchers within the Dodgers starting rotation.
Among pitchers with at least 200 innings since the start of the 2021 season, Urías’ 161 ERA+ is second only to Scherzer (167) during that span.
