The Los Angeles Dodgers began another East Coast road trip with a matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but they may have forgotten to bring their bats with them as they dropped the series opener, 1-0.
It was another highly frustrating outing for the offense as they went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine on base.
Some of the credit for their offensive struggles has to be given to Jared Jones, one of the Pirates’ promising young aces, as he pitched six scoreless with three hits allowed, three walks and six strikeouts.
But the Dodgers had their chances to score and could not take advantage of it, even when Jones was out of the game and the Pirates went to their bullpen, stranding the tying run in scoring position in the seventh and eight innings as well.
Freddie Freeman was the only Dodgers hitter with more than one hit in the game, and Will Smith, Shohei Ohtani and Gavin Lux had the only other hits.
Tyler Glasnow turned in another strong start, keeping the Dodgers in the game despite their lack of offense. The right-hander pitched six innings, allowing just one run on three hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts.
His only real mistake came in the third inning, which led to a solo home run from Jack Suwinski to give the Pirates their only run against Glasnow. Suwinski has been a problem for the Dodgers throughout his career, and he proved to provide the game-winning run in this one.
Tyler Glasnow becomes first to 100 strikeouts
In the fifth inning, Glasnow struck out Henry Davis with a 97 mph fastball. It was Glasnow’s 100th strikeout of the season, making him the first player in MLB to reach the century mark this year.
The last Dodgers pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts in a season before anyone else was Clayton Kershaw in 2016.
Glasnow has a career high of 162 strikeouts, which he set last season, and he seems destined to break that mark in 2024.
