The Los Angeles Dodgers rallied from a four-run deficit and went on to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-7, in 10 innings. It was the Dodgers’ first win in extra innings this season, and they avoided their first three-game losing streak in more than a month.
Julio Urías overcame early struggles to turn in a quality start against a tough Blue Jays lineup. He allowed three hits in the first inning but limited the damage to one run.
That would be a common theme for most of the night as Urías’ final line was six innings pitched, eight hits, three runs, two walks and five strikeouts. “I definitely battled through it,” Urías said through an interpreter after the game.
“It’s one of those starts where there was a little frustration from the soft contact that was finding holes to be hits. But at the end of the day, it was one of my better starts.
“One of my starts I felt better with, just because I fought the whole way through and made pitches when I needed to make pitches. I felt really good with what I did.”
Urías credited his ability to make big pitches for escaping multiple jams and getting through six innings. “I just tried to get out of innings, try to make pitches when I needed to make pitches and try to get through some of those obstacles,” Urías said.
“Especially when there was traffic, just tried to make pitches when I needed to. They came in with a good game plan, and I was just making adjustments on the fly and trying to make pitches when I needed to make pitches. Just compete all the way through it to get out of those innings.”
Urías felt a sense of accomplishment to get through six innings and give the Dodgers an opportunity to complete the comeback. “We know how good our team is and how good our offense is,” he began.
“To give them an opportunity to put up runs, that’s what I feel good about. That presence on the mound, that compete on the mound, and doing what I need to do to help the team win games like this.”
Julio Urías looking for more consistency in second half with Dodgers
Urías’ start against the Blue Jays was a microcosm of his 2023 season, which has been mired by inconsistency. He has pitched to a 7-6 record, 4.98 ERA, 4.80 FIP and 1.21 WHIP in 15 starts thus far.
Urías came out of the All-Star break by throwing six scoreless innings against the New York Mets, only to then give up a career-high eight runs in his next start against the Baltimore Orioles.
