Heading into the offseason it was unlikely the Los Angeles Dodgers would re-sign each of their marquee free agents. Despite various indications suggesting Max Scherzer and Corey Seager were going to remain with the Dodgers, both joined a new club prior to the MLB lockout beginning.

“Obviously watching him develop and turn into the player that he’s become was pretty special for me playing for six years to the right of him,” Justin Turner said of Seager.

“You know it’s a possibility in free agency, but you don’t really think it’s going to happen until it happens. It’s bittersweet. It sucks that I’ve probably played my last game with him, and at the same time you’re excited for him to take advantage of the free agency market and set himself up for the rest of his life.

“I think bittersweet is probably the perfect way to put it.”

The Dodgers selected Seager with the 18th overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, and he went on to make his big league debut three years later. Seager supplanted Jimmy Rollins as the starting shortstop for the final month of the 2015 season and used that to catapult him.

His career with the Dodgers included a unanimous National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2016, two All-Star Game selections, a pair of Silver Sluggers, and of course MVP of the NL Championship Series and World Series en route helping the team capture the title in 2020.

Turner has fond Seager memories

Turner’s Dodgers career overlapping Seager’s allowed for the two to become close friends, and one of their bonds centered around being dairy-free.

“Our thing was always finding good-tasting snacks that didn’t have dairy in it. Always going back and forth with that was probably one of the coolest things, but we spent so much time together, there will probably be a lot of little things that pop up down the road as you think of different stuff,” Turner said.

“But off the top of my head, probably the funniest stuff is the snacks; Oreos being at the top of the list. When we’d go to a visiting clubhouse and one of us walks in the snack room first and there’s Oreos, a lot of times it was grabbing a pack and throwing it on his locker, or he’d grab a pack and throw it on my locker.

Oreos are dairy-free and it feels like you’re getting dessert.”
