The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep of the New York Mets with a 10-3 victory in the series finale following a doubleheader the previous day.
Will Smith led the Dodgers with a two-homer day. He hit his first of the game in the second inning, which opened the scoring and gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
With a 3-3 tie in the eighth, Smith hit his second of the day to put the Dodgers back on top. It was his ninth homer of the season and third in the last two days.
Following Smith’s second homer, the Dodgers’ offense started to break out. Jason Heyward followed with a triple and Gavin Lux worked a walk before stealing second.
Miguel Rojas then singled home another run to make it a 5-3 game and Miguel Vargas doubled home two more runs. But the Dodgers weren’t done scoring just yet as Shohei Ohtani blasted a two-run homer, capping off a six-run eighth inning.
Just for good measure, Heyward homered in the ninth inning to give the Dodgers their 10th run of the game.
Prior to Smith tying it, the Dodgers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with an RBI single from Andy Pages in the fourth inning, and another one from Shohei Ohtani in the fifth inning.
However, the Mets came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Tomás Nido hit a two-run homer against Elieser Hernández. After Hernández came out of the game, J.D. Martinez tied it with a double versus Michael Grove, driving home Francisco Lindor.
The Dodgers went to their bullpen early because James Paxton only pitched three innings in his outing. He gave the Dodgers three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three compared to no walks.
However, the Dodgers were limiting Paxton as he was pitching on four days rest, which is less that they’ve given their starters this year, so he came out of the game with just 50 pitches thrown.
Hernández faced three hitters, all of whom reached base, before he came out of the game, and all three runs scored were credited to him.
Outside of Hernández, the bullpen was effective, with Yohan Ramírez, Grove, Anthony Banda and Blake Treinen all pitching an inning without a run credited to them. However, Grove did allow the inherited runner to score.
Ryan Yarbrough pitched the final two innings to close out the game.
Dodgers getting back on track
The Dodgers were in the midst of an offensive slump that led to a five-game losing streak, but they appear to have turned that around with three straight wins. Freddie Freeman believes the rained out game may have played a role in that.
The club now has an off day on Thursday before returning to Dodger Stadium for a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies.
