The Los Angeles Dodgers fortified their starting rotation during the offseason by acquiring Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but now need to rely on continued for progression with both in hopes of a return in September.
Glasnow has been out since the middle of August because of right elbow tendinitis that was considered relatively minor. Glasnow believed he could continue pitching but understood the Dodgers choosing to prioritize the bigger picture.
More recently, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Glasnow’s recovery was advancing slower than expected. He was due to play catch earlier this week but that had to be delayed until Friday.
Roberts said Glasnow’s throwing session went well and he’s due to repeat the exercise on Saturday, via SportsNet LA:
“Good. The plan is he’s going to continue that throwing progression tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Yamamoto is scheduled to continue his rehab assignment with a second start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday:
“Yamamoto is going to throw a ‘pen Sunday and then he’ll go out on Tuesday to pitch potentially three innings for the OKC team.”
Yamamoto threw two scoreless innings in his first rehab start, and another in the bullpen.
Brusdar Graterol also is trending in the right direction and will face batters in a simulated game:
“Brusdar is going to do a live situation tomorrow.”
Graterol suffered a Grade 1 right hamstring strain just eight pitches into his 2024 debut earlier this month. There was some initial fear he sustained a season-ending hamstring strain but an MRI confirmed a more minor injury.
Graterol moved well as he went through fielding drills at Dodger Stadium on Thursday.
“I missed it, but I heard it was really good. It seems like he could’ve stolen a base tonight,” Roberts said.
“How he recovered from what we saw a few weeks ago to now, prayers were answered. He’s just going to keep progressing. I don’t know when his time to return is, but today was a good day for Brusdar.”
Dodgers worried about Tyler Glasnow?
While Glasnow has resumed a throwing program, the Dodgers still need some good fortune on their side given the limited time remaining in the season.
Roberts did not definitively state whether or not the Dodgers could count on the right-hander pitching again in 2024.
“We’re hopeful. I think there’s still a lot of variables to be certain, but I think everyone in the organization is hopeful,” he said.
