The Los Angeles Dodgers held their final workout of the spring before the start of Cactus League play, as pitchers once again faced live hitters on the back fields.
Among those that threw were Kenta Maeda and Yimi Garcia, facing Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger and Matt Kemp, among others. Garcia missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, so Thursday was his first time facing live hitters in quite some time.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also gave some insight in what can be expected of some players in the upcoming games this weekend as Clayton Kershaw is set to make his spring debut on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners.
Additionally, Andrew Toles will make his spring debut in one of Saturday’s split-squad games, as he will play a corner outfield spot. Toles has not appeared in a game since last May when he suffered a season-ending ACL injury.
Austin Barnes won’t be taking the field anytime soon though, as Roberts announced that he is dealing with right elbow discomfort. Barnes nor the Dodgers believe the injury is serious, but they will of course err on the side of catuion.
Instead of catching or showing off his versatility at second base, Barnes for now will be limited to time as a designated hitter. Barnes did catch Maeda’s bullpen session though and was able to throw the ball back to him without any issues.
