The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned Ryan Pepiot to make room on the active roster ahead of their series opener against the San Francisco Giants.
Bruihl is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season after making the team’s Opening Day Roster. In 18 games with L.A., he’s 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA, 4.69 FIP and 1.13 WHIP while striking out 11 and walking five over 17.2 innings.
The left-hander was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2017, and prior to the 2021 season, he had never pitched above High-A before a rapid rise through the system that ended with him making his Major League debut on Aug. 8.
From there, he pitched in 21 regular season games, going 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA, 3.97 FIP and 1.07 WHIP in 18.2 innings. He also tossed two scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series.
In his two seasons with the Dodgers, he owns a 3.22 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 39 games. In 28 innings with OKC this year, Bruihl has posted a 3.86 ERA with 23 strikeouts and 20 walks.
Pepiot was recalled to the club on Sunday to eat some innings for the pitching staff and replace David Price on the roster when he went on the 15-day injured list with left wrist inflammation.
The right-hander pitched two-plus innings against the San Diego Padres but struggled to find his command while issuing four walks. He ended up allowing one run on three hits on 74 pitches.
Pepiot has appeared in eight games for the Dodgers, making seven starts and posting a 3.78 ERA and 5.78 FIP while striking out 38 and walking 26 with a 1.53 WHIP in 33.1 innings of work.
With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he is 8-0 with a 2.58 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 16 games (14 starts). He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the third round (102nd overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Butler University.
Orioles claim Jake Reed from Dodgers
The Baltimore Orioles claimed Jake Reed off waivers after he was designated for assignment by the Dodgers as the corresponding roster move for Blake Treinen being activated off the 60-day injured list last Friday.
Overall, Reed had a 1.93 ERA and 1.50 WHIP to go along with the one save across five appearances for the Dodgers this season and pitched to a 3.38 ERA over six games for the Dodgers in 2021.
