The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated David Price from the family medical emergency list prior to the series finale against the San Diego Padres. Ian Gibaut was designated for assignment as the corresponding roster move.
Price was put on leave Thursday and missed the maximum three days permitted. “It was a family emergency,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed at the time.
“I don’t want to get into details. As we understand it, everyone was OK. It’s just something that he felt that he needed to be with his family. Obviously, Major League Baseball granted that. We’re going to certainly miss him for three days.”
Price last pitched in the series finale against the Colorado Rockies, throwing a scoreless inning to get the final three outs of the Dodgers’ 8-4 win. It marked a sixth consecutive appearance in which the left-hander did not allow a run.
Price has a 3.20 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 19 games this season. He’s exclusively been utilized as a relief pitcher despite the Dodgers dealing with injuries to starters Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw and Andrew Heaney at various points.
Gibaut is now passing on waivers for a second time in the past week. The Dodgers claimed him from the Cleveland Guardians and added the right-hander to their roster on Friday, however he did not appear in a game for the team.
Tampa Bay Rays selected Gibaut in the 11th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. Gibaut made his MLB debut with the Rays in 2019 and has also pitched for the Texas Rangers (2020-21), Minnesota Twins (2021) and Guardians.
Over parts of four seasons in the Majors he’s 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA, 5.27 FIP and 1.50 WHIP in 28 relief appearances.
Dodgers welcome back Betts
Also on Sunday, the Dodgers reinstated Mookie Betts from the 10-day injured list. Betts hasn’t played since June 15 and was on the IL since June 19 due to a right rib fracture.
