Will and Cara Smith welcomed their first child, Charlotte Ann Smith, in the morning hours before the Los Angeles Dodgers faced the San Diego Padres in Game 4 of the National League Division Series.

The Dodgers made the announcement on Twitter just over an hour and a half before first pitch at Petco Park, which unexpectedly was delayed due to inclement weather. Unfortunately for Smith and the Dodgers, it wound up being their final game of the year.

Smith went hitless but had an RBI in three at-bats of the 5-3 loss. The Fox Sports 1 (FS1) broadcast relayed Smith drove up to Los Angeles in the middle of the night when Cara went into labor. She gave birth shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday, and the Dodgers arranged a helicopter ride for Smith back to San Diego.

The Smiths announced this past April they were expecting their first child, and in the birth announcement, Cara alluded to Charlotte Ann arriving earlier than expected.

The October 15 date is of course synonymous with Dodgers postseason history as the date Kirk Gibson and Justin Turner hit respective walk-off home runs.

Will and Cara Smith met when they were students at the University of Louisville. They were engaged after the 2019 season and married in December 2020.

The Smiths recently joined the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) and Playworks through their Catching Hope Foundation to support the health and wellbeing of students at William Northrup Elementary School in Alhambra.

“As a Dodger player, there’s a responsibility to give back,” Will said. “It’s part of the culture in our clubhouse and it’s been that way for a while now throughout the Dodgers organization. For myself, my wife, to be in a situation to be able to give back to kids, means a lot.”
