As Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said would be the case, Julio Urias was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Luis Avilan was recalled, giving Los Angeles a nine-man bullpen for the next couple of games.
Urias went 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA, 3.58 FIP, 1.54 WHIP and 44 strikeouts over eight starts. His time with the Dodgers began as a spot start against the New York Mets on May 27. He was sent back to Oklahoma City the following day, but returned soon after because of injuries.
While the Dodgers have a cap on Urias’ innings this season and spoke of temporarily shutting him down, even setting a soft deadline of June 22. The 19-year-old faced the Washington Nationals that night and remained in the starting rotation.
Including starts with Oklahoma City, Urias has thrown 77.1 innings this season. He threw 80.1 in 2015, and set a career high with 87.2 innings with High-A Rancho Cucamonga in 2014.
Avilan has only appeared in four games with the Dodgers this season, throwing one inning and allowing a combined three runs. He owns a 5.53 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 26 games with Oklahoma City.
Avilan had a 5.17 ERA over 23 games with the Dodgers last season, but was improved down the stretch. He last pitched on Friday, which gives Los Angeles a much-needed fresh arm in the bullpen.
