Jaime Schultz was designated for assignment on Thursday in order to create room for Rich Hill on the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 40-man roster. Hill was reinstated from the 60-day injured list for his start in the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles.

It’s expected to be the first of four outings in September as Hill builds up to being in position to serve a as a fourth starter for the Dodgers in the postseason. He’d been sidelined by a strained flexor tendon since June 20.

Schultz was in his first season with the Dodgers after spending the past six with the Tampa Bay Rays. He was acquired from the Rays on Jan. 8 in exchange for Caleb Sampen.

Schultz made his Dodgers debut on April 11, pitching a scoreless inning in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He appeared in three games during April and another in July. Over those four games, Schultz pitched to a 7.20 ERA and had three strikeouts in five innings.

In 47 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he went 2-3 with a 5.85 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 62 strikeouts.

The Dodgers now have one week to potentially trade Schultz if he is claimed off waivers. Should Schultz clear waivers, he would become eligible to be released or sent outright to the Minor Leagues.
