The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Corey Seager on the 10-day disabled list due to a right UCL sprain. Seager will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the season.
Seager battled elbow trouble last season but avoided surgery by going the route of rest and rehab. He and the Dodgers were confident that was sufficient and would allow for him to make a full recovery.
Seager was slowed by elbow trouble during the spring but appeared healthy come Opening Day. He finishes the year batting .267/.348/.396 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs and 13 RBI.
For Valera, it’s his second stint with the club. He previously joined the Dodgers on April 15, when Logan Forsythe was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation.
Valera was then optioned back to Oklahoma City two days later. He appeared in two games for Los Angeles, each time off the bench, and went a combined 0-for-1 with a walk. Although his initial time with the Dodgers was brief, it did allow Valera an opportunity to interact with childhood idol Chase Utley.
Valera is batting .373/.459/.549 with three doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI in 17 games with Oklahoma City. He has played second base, third base, shortstop and left field for OKC, though considers second base his best position.
