The Los Angeles Dodgers trailed by at least five runs for a third consecutive game on Wednesday night, but they once again erased that deficit to claw out a 7-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Similar to Mitch White in the series opener at Busch Stadium, Tony Gonsolin struggled to get the final strike and out. He managed to complete five innings but exited with the Dodgers trailing 5-0.
The five runs Gonsolin allowed represented his most in 52 career games (44 starts). Gonsolin was on the verge of heading into the All-Star break with his first loss of the season, but the Dodgers continued to chip away until getting over the hump in the ninth inning.
Their comeback started on Will Smith’s two-run homer in the seventh, and continued when Mookie Betts hit an RBI double and Trea Turner drove in a pair on his base hit in the eighth.

Justin Turner then led off the ninth inning with a double and was replaced by Austin Barnes as a pinch-runner. He should have scored on Cody Bellinger’s single to right field but slipped rounding third base and had to retreat.
Fortunately for Barnes and the Dodgers, he just beat the throw to third base and the sequence allowed Bellinger to get into scoring position. Max Muncy’s sacrifice fly tied the game and Hanser Alberto, who struck out as a pinch-hitter for Gavin Lux in the eighth inning, delivered a go-ahead RBI single.
Evan Phillips gets first save with Dodgers
Craig Kimbrel kept the Dodgers’ deficit at 6-5 in the eighth inning, which was his first appearance since Saturday. That created an opportunity for Evan Phillips to convert his first save with the Dodgers.
