Coming off a big series victory over the first-place Colorado Rockies on the road, the Los Angeles Dodgers looked to carry over that momentum into their series beginning Monday night against the last-place Cincinnati Reds.

They were unable to do that though as they got flat out beat in every aspect on the game in the series opener, falling 10-6 to Cincinnati. Coupled with a Rockies win, the loss dropped the Dodgers back to 1.5 games out of first place in the National League West.

They were swept by the Reds in a four-game series at Dodger Stadium earlier in the season, so they are now 0-5 against them on the year.

Reds All-Star second baseman Scooter Gennett had another big game at the plate against the Dodgers, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Included in that were a pair of two-out RBI singles.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts discussed his club being winless against the Reds, or any opponent, and the difficulty they’ve found in retiring Gennett, via Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

“I wouldn’t expect for our club to be 0-5 against anyone,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “That first time around they really pitched us well. We still can’t figure a way to get Gennett out, and that was apparent again.”

Gennett is now 14-for-19 against the Dodgers on the season, which is good for a .737 batting average, to go along with two home runs, six runs scored and nine RBI in just four games.

There still are two games left in the series, and the Dodgers will need to come away with victories to keep pace with the Rockies in the division. The first step in getting those wins will be to slow down Gennett, and Hyun-Jin Ryu will get the first chance at doing that on Tuesday.
