Whether through the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation or players such as Clayton Kershaw, Justin Turner and others doing so on an individual level, the franchise is regularly active in the local community through charitable efforts.

That’s grown to include Dodgers Spanish-language broadcaster Jaime Jarrín. His wife tragically passed away earlier this year, which led to the family establishing the Jaime & Blanca Jarrín Foundation.

On Monday the foundation held their first annual golf classic, a sold-out event at the San Gabriel Country Club. Former Los Angeles Lakers champion Byron Scott, LAFC players, Alysha Del Valle and former Dodgers Adrian Gonzalez and Nomar Garciaparra were among those on hand.

“This is really very special for me. It has a great meaning. I was married 65 years to my wife Blanca and she was really a very special lady. Very generous. I’m sure she’s very pleased with what is going on today,” Jarrín told DodgerBlue.com.

“My wife is smiling from heaven because of this. We want to help lots of kids to higher education. We believe education is the basis for everything. We want to help as much as possible with scholarships in two fields: in law, because we are backed by Los Defensores, and communications because of the background of Jorge and myself.”

“It’s very, very, very delightful. The weather is great, we have a beautiful day and the field is fabulous. It’s great to see so many friends and people I don’t know and am meeting for the first time. It’s very, very special.”

Although Gonzalez is multiple years removed from last being part of the Dodgers organization, he maintains a close relationship with the Jarrín family. “The fact that he’s such an example to all of us, everything he’s meant to the Hispanic community,” Gonzalez said of Jaime.

“For him to start his foundation is an amazing thing. For me, it’s important to come out here and support because he’s going to do so many great things for kids that want to become sportscasters or teachers.”
