Emmet Sheehan earned another Minor League award as he was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month for August. The recognition comes not long after Sheehan earned PCL Pitcher of the Week honors for Aug. 17-23.
The right-hander made four starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City during August, going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 0.94 WHIP while holding opponents to a .161 batting average. He struck out 28 batters and walked eight over 20.2 innings pitched in the four outings.
Among pitchers who logged a minimum of 15 innings last month, Sheehan led the PCL in WHIP, batting average against, strikeouts per nine innings (12.00) and hits allowed per nine (5.00). He finished second in the league for strikeouts, bested only by his Comets teammate Jackson Ferris (33).
Sheehan became the first Oklahoma City Comets player to win a monthly award since Óscar Mercado was PCL Player of the Month for August 2023. Sheehan’s Pitcher of the Month award is OKC’s first since Mike Montgomery in 2023.
It is further highlighted by also coming after spending a brief stretch back up with the Dodgers but not pitching as they were able to manage the bullpen’s workload. Moreover, both of Sheehan’s PCL honors came after he was demoted to Triple-A amid season-long struggles.
Emmet Sheehan likely joining Dodgers
Signs are pointing to Sheehan making another return to the Dodgers roster in the coming days as they are in need of a spot starter. That became all the more likely when Eric Lauer was placed on the 15-day injured list due to left elbow inflammation.
Manager Dave Roberts had already indicated the Dodgers would rely on a spot starter at some point during their homestand of nine games in nine days. Sheehan is currently lined up to start for the Comets on Sunday, which is when the Dodgers need to drop someone into their rotation in order to keep pitchers on their usual schedules.
Given Lauer’s injury, it’s plausible Sheehan receives multiple opportunities with the Dodgers. Particularly when taking into account Shohei Ohtani’s trouble in getting back on the mound and Roberts suggesting the focus for Gavin Stone is more on 2027 than the end of the season.
Sheehan is 4-8 with a 5.29 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 95.1 innings across 20 starts so far with L.A. this season.
