Dodgers World Series Highlights: Freddie Freeman’s Home Run, Mookie Betts & Teoscar Hernández Contribute Defensively

The Los Angeles Dodgers pushed the New York Yankees to the brink of elimination with a 4-2 win in Game 3 of the World Series, and now have an opportunity to capture the eighth championship in franchise history on Tuesday night.

Walker Buehler turned in another fantastic postseason performance in his third career World Series start. Buehler went into the outing feeling plenty comfortable, both because of having a history of playoff success but also due to two prior World Series starts coming in a Game 3.

He didn’t allow a hit until Giancarlo Stanton’s double with one out in the fourth inning. Buehler at one point struck out four batters in a row.

The extra-base hit nearly led to a run for the Yankees but Mookie Betts made a diving catch in right field and Teoscar Hernández throwing out Stanton at home plate.

“The Mookie play was interesting. Obviously the ball is spinning a little weird and he kind of stepped back for a second and made the play. He’s won a few Gold Gloves out there, so that’s something we kind of expect from him,” Buehler said after the Dodgers’ win.

“Teo threw Stanton out at home and I got in the dugout, and I said, ‘They don’t know about you in New York. You’d think they would remember what he did when we played here in the regular season.’ Pretty cool for him to show off the other side of the ball and kind of put a perfect throw, and Will put the tag on.

“That was a big momentum play. Obviously the first couple innings it was going pretty smooth. For them to get a little momentum and shut it down that way, it was pretty cool.”

The plays by Betts and Hernández preserved the Dodgers’ 3-0 lead. They jumped ahead in the first inning on Freddie Freeman’s two-run home run.

Freeman tied George Springer’s MLB record of hitting a homer in five World Series games in a row. Freeman’s streak began in 2021 with the Atlanta Braves.

Betts’ RBI flare single in the third inning extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0, and Kiké Hernández’s base hit in the sixth brought in another run.

The Dodgers were on the verge of a shutout until Michael Kopech surrendered a two-run homer to Alex Verdugo with two outs in the ninth inning.

Two days after suffering a partially dislocated left shoulder, Shohei Ohtani was in the lineup. He went 0-for-3 with one run scored, one walk and one strikeout.
