The Los Angeles Dodgers’ seven-game road trip began with plenty of buzz as the organization’s top pitching prospect Julio Urias was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make his Major League debut.
On top of any nerves that come with such a start, Urias faced the challenge of his debut coming against the reigning National League champion New York Mets at Citi Field. Urias joined the Dodgers after going 4-1 over eight games (seven starts) with Oklahoma City.
He left behind a streak of 27 consecutive scoreless innings and led the Pacific Coast League with a 1.10 ERA and 0.78 WHIP. After Jacob deGrom kept the Dodgers off the board in the top of the first, Urias faced Curtis Granderson to start the bottom half of the inning.
His first pitch was a high fastball for ball one, and Urias’ second offering was pulled foul down the right field line. Granderson worked a full count before getting called out on strikes for Urias’ first strikeout in the Majors:
While Urias opened the inning on a positive note, the Mets went on to mount a two-out rally and finished the inning with a 3-0 lead.
