The Los Angeles Dodgers finalized their trade for Joey Gallo on Tuesday afternoon, sending pitching prospect Clayton Beeter to the New York Yankees.
Beeter was selected by the Dodgers in Compensation Round B (No. 66 overall) of the 2020 MLB Draft. He signed for a $1,196,500 bonus, which was higher than the $1,003,300 slot value.
“We’re going to try and develop him as a starter,” Dodgers director of amateur scouting Billy Gasparino said at the time. “That’s the current plan. He did it for four starts at Texas Tech and he performed really well. We think he took to it well from all of our research.”
Beeter began his professional career in 2021 with the Great Lakes Loons, going 0-4 with a 3.13 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 23 games (22 starts). The right-hander finished the season with the Tulsa Drillers and produced similar statistics by going 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA in five starts.
However, returning to the Double-A level this season did not pan out well for the 23-year-old. Beeter went 0-3 with a 5.75 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. He did have a 36% strikeout rate, but also pitched to a 14.3% walk rate and allowed 10 home runs over 51.2 innings.
As for Gallo, he’s batting .159/.282/.339 with four doubles, 12 home runs, 82 wRC+ and MLB-worst 39% strikeout rate. He played both corner outfield positions for the Yankees, but became expendable due to ongoing struggles and their acquisition of Andrew Benintendi.

Gallo figures to receive the bulk of his time playing left field or as an option off the Dodgers’ bench. His arrival induced a domino effect that saw the Dodgers trade Jake Lamb to the Seattle Mariners for cash considerations or a player to be named later.
Gallo’s tenure with the Dodgers could be brief, as he’s due to become a free agent after the 2022 season.
