Dodgers News: Tommy Edman To Focus On Center Field During Rehab Assignment

3 Min Read

The Los Angeles Dodgers began the final month of the regular season with Michael Kopech and Hyeseong Kim back on their roster, but still awaiting the returns of Tommy Edman, Max Muncy, Brock Stewart and Alex Vesia.

Edman began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday night, along with Kyle Hurt, who could potentially become an option out of the bullpen for the Dodgers down the stretch if needed.

Edman hit second and was the designated hitter in the Comets’ lineup in his first game action since spraining his right ankle with the Dodgers on Aug. 3.

However, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the plan for Edman moving forward is going to be playing center field over the duration of his rehab assignment, according to Sonja Chen of MLB.com

Edman’s positional versatility was one of the factors that drew the Dodgers’ interest and prompted their involvement in what became a three-team trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox last year.

However, lingering right ankle trouble has limited Edman’s time in center field this season. He largely played second base to begin the year before the Dodgers felt comfortable enough Edman’s ankle could withstand the demands of roaming the outfield.

When Edman needed to go back on the injured list last month, he and the Dodgers made it a pint to not rush his rehab process. That was driven by wanting to ensure his availability for the postseason, and also so that Edman could fully recover and be an option in center field.

Tommy Edman wants to play center field

When recently discussing his rehab process, Edman reiterated a goal is to be able to play center field upon returning.

“I’ll definitely be checking that box off before I go out and play, making sure I’m able to handle center field,” Edman said.

Edman went through drills in center field on Sunday as part of his workout. If he does slot into center field once coming off the injured list, it will afford the Dodgers some flexibility in moving Andy Pages to left field, where Roberts has noted the team needs more offensive production.
