Teoscar Hernández was named among the National League reserves for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, marking a second career selection to the event and adding onto what’s been an impressive first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Hernández was one of three Dodgers — joining Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts — who advanced to Phase 2 of All-Star Game voting. He was on track to be in the NL lineup before being overtaken by San Diego Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr.

Betts also lost a lead, resulting in Ohtani being the lone Dodgers All-Star starter for 2024.

Hernández had been third among NL outfielders in voting but slipped to fourth when All-Star Game starters were announced. Tatis was in fourth place when Phase 2 began, and finished roughly 3,000 votes ahead of Hernández.

Outfield starters for the NL are Christian Yelich (Milwaukee Brewers), Jurickson Profar (Padres) and Tatis.

Hernández nevertheless is back in the All-Star Game for the first time since earning a selection in 2021 while with the Toronto Blue Jays. He went on to win a Silver Slugger Award that year and earned votes for American League MVP as well.

Hernández has been nothing short of an unsung hero for the Dodgers after being overshadowed by Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto among their free agency additions.

His presence has provided a power bat from the right side to bring some balance to the Dodgers lineup. Hernández entered play Sunday fifth overall in the NL with 19 home runs, which lead outfielders in the league.

With Hernández now officially in the All-Star Game, next to watch is if he will be named to the Home Run Derby at Globe Life Field. The 31-year-old expressed an interest in participating in the event for the first time in his career.

Ohtani was a likely selection for the 2024 Home Run Derby, but he and the Dodgers agreed it was best to skip the event due to his ongoing recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Teoscar Hernández’s All-Star Game history

Hernández started for the American League in the 2021 MLB All-Star Game at Coors Field, and went 1-for-2 with a double while playing five innings.

Ohtani was in the AL lineup with Hernández as well, and 2021 was the first time he took part in a Home Run Derby.
