The Los Angeles Dodgers signed José Ureña prior to Tuesday’s game against the New York Mets. Chuckie Robinson was designated for assignment to make room for Ureña on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, and optioned Will Klein to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Ureña is the second new relief pitcher to join the team in as many days, as the Dodgers acquired Klein in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on Monday. Chris Stratton was DFA’d in order to add Klein to the Dodgers’ 40-man and active rosters.
There’s been more bullpen activity dating back to last week, when the Dodgers signed Stratton and traded for Alexis Díaz.
That’s all come as the Dodgers await the returns of Michael Kopech, Kirby Yates and Blake Treinen. They also have been without Evan Phillips since May 7 because of right forearm discomfort, and it was announced over the weekend he is set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Ureña joins the Dodgers one day after electing free agency upon clearing waivers when he was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays this past Friday.
The veteran right-hander has pitched for the Miami Marlins, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, Mets and Blue Jays over parts of 11 seasons.
During his big league career, Ureña is 44-77 with a 4.78 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 239 games (154 starts). He’s appeared in one game for the Mets and six (two starts) with the Blue Jays thus far in 2025, going a combined 7-2 with a 5.87 ERA.
Dodgers roster moves for José Ureña
Robinson was DFA’d a mere three days after he was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Robinson was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 21st round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
Robinson made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2022 and also spent time at the big league level with the Chicago White Sox.
The 30-year-old has appeared in 51 career games, batting a combined .132/.170/.194 with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI during that span.
Robinson never joined the Dodgers roster nor did he play in a game for any of their Minor League affiliates prior to getting designated for assignment.
Meanwhile, Klein now heads to Oklahoma City after spending just one day up with the Dodgers. He did not appear in their extra-innings loss to the Mets.
