Shohei Ohtani’s 53-game on-base streak came to an end on Wednesday night in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 3-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
Ohtani, who resumed two-way duties by throwing six scoreless innings on the mound, went 0-for-4 at the plate. It was the first time he didn’t reach base safely in a game since Aug. 24, 2025.
Ohtani finished tied with Shawn Green for the longest on-base streak in L.A. Dodgers history, but fell short of Duke Snider’s franchise record of 58 games.
“I’m focused, as a leadoff hitter, to get on base,” Shohei Ohtani said on SportsNet LA through interpreter Will Ireton. “As long as I feel good overall, then the result will follow. That hasn’t been the case.
“The season is not over. If I can start another streak, that would be great. The season is not over yet, so we’ll see how it goes.”
During his 53-game on-base streak, Ohtani collected 34 hits, 23 walks and four intentional walks. It was the longest on-base streak in MLB history by a Japanese-born player, which previously belonged to Ichiro Suzuki at 43 games.
Before his most recent streak, Ohtani’s career high was a 36-game on-base streak from Sept. 11, 2022 through April 15, 2023, while a member of the Los Angeles Angels.
Shohei Ohtani’s 2026 stats
Ohtani has gotten off to somewhat of a slow start this season as he’s batting .258/.382/.472 with four doubles, five home runs and 11 RBI in 111 plate appearances entering play Thursday. Although it’s still a solid line overall, it’s short of the production Ohtani and the Dodgers expect him to put up.
“It’s going in the right direction,” Ohtani recently said of his hitting. “Overall in my career, I think April has been OK. So I think it’s where it’s supposed to be.”
Ohtani has gone hitless in seven of his 23 games this season, but has been able to reach base at a high clip due to already drawing 21 walks (five intentional) and getting hit by a pitch three times.
“He’s really not hit his stride yet,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently said of Ohtani. “He’s really not comfortable with his swing. It just shows that he’s still an impact player. He’s getting on base. The streak speaks to that.”
