Shohei Ohtani Releasing Children’s Book: ‘Decoy Saves Opening Day’

18 Min Read

Shohei Ohtani is a three-time MVP, All-MLB as both a hitter and pitcher, and he’s also a World Series champion. But now the Los Angeles Dodgers’ superstar is adding another title to his résumé: author.

Ohtani announced he is releasing a children’s book about his ever-popular dog, Decoy (Dekopin in Japanese). “Decoy Saves Opening Day” is set to release on Feb. 3, 2026, and is now available for pre-order at all major book sellers for $21.99 in hardcover format.

The book is co-authored by Ohtani himself, along with Michael Blank, while illustrations are by Fanny Liem. It is being published by HarperCollins Publishers.

Proceeds from the book will be used to support non-profit animal rescue organizations that help animals find their forever homes. Ohtani already is a sponsor of the organizations, and now is using more of his platform to help real-life animals in need.

The book is 32 pages long and it’s recommended for 4-8 year olds. It’s also getting an international release, including in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain.

The plot follows Decoy getting ready to throw out the first pitch on Opening Day. However, he forgot his lucky baseball at home, so he has to go retrieve it and get back to the stadium before it’s too late.

Decoy, of course, has experience with the first pitch before a game. Last season prior to the bobblehead night celebrating Ohtani and his dog, Decoy ran the ball from the pitcher’s mound to home plate.

Decoy was trained by Ohtani to deliver the ceremonial first pitch, and now the two-way superstar has further commemorated one of the best first pitches in MLB history.

“It’s a really special night. I hope to buy some special snack for him,” Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton after the game.

What kind of dog is Decoy Ohtani?

Ohtani’s dog is a Dutch Kooikerhondje, which are considered lively, agile, self-confident, good-natured and alert. The American Kennel Club also notes the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje breed is faithful, easy-going and friendly in the home.
