The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Brusdar Graterol on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation and recalled Ben Casparius from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
In addition, the Dodgers also activated Austin Barnes and optioned Hunter Feduccia.
Casparius returns for his third stint with the team after recording his first win on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies. On the season, he is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
He posted a 4-3 record in 16 games (14 starts) and a 3.36 ERA over 67 innings with 72 strikeouts with Oklahoma City. He was promoted from Double-A Tulsa on May 7 after going 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in five games.
He has spent four minor league seasons in the Dodgers’ organization, going 14-17 in 79 games (57 starts) with 346 strikeouts against 150 walks. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of the University of Connecticut.
Anthony Banda was an optioned to be activated as early as today, but the Dodgers instead decided to go with Casparius, likely to give them extra length out of the bullpen.
It would not be surprising to see the two swapped on the roster during the series in Colorado, as long as no other injuries come up.
Dodgers place Brusdar Graterol on injured list
Graterol is back on the injured list for the third time this season, previously missing time with a right hamstring strain that initially was believed to be season-ending before additional testing, and right shoulder discomfort that was caused by a hip issue and forced him to miss the majority of the season.
Graterol appeared in seven games this season, allowing two runs over 7.1 innings with seven strikeouts. He has been with the Dodgers four seasons, and he is a combined 10-8 with a 2.69 ERA in 178 career games.
He started his career with the Minnesota Twins in 2019, going 1-1 in 10 games with a 4.66 ERA. He was acquired by the Dodgers on February 10, 2020 from the Twins along with Luke Raley in exchange for right-handed pitcher Kenta Maeda and infielder Jair Camargo.
Given where the calendar is, the injury could ultimately be one that ends his season. There is a possible chance he could return late in the postseason run, but he is ineligible to be activated until the conclusion of the National League Division Series.
He would also need time to build back up if he’s able to return, making an NL Championship Series return unlikely as well.
The Dodgers were counting on Graterol to be a multi-inning option for them in the postseason, making his loss all the tougher for them to deal with.
