The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Anthony Banda and placed Brent Honeywell on the 15-day injured list with a cracked right middle fingernail minutes before first pitch in their series finale against the San Diego Padres.

Banda was first placed on the IL on Sept. 10 after suffering a hairline fracture in his left hand. Banda hit his hand on a paper towel dispenser while frustrated, which caused the injury.

“It was a moment of weakness and frustration. Where he decided to take on a solid object that ultimately won the battle,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Fortunately, the Dodgers still expected the left-hander to return before the season ended, and he healed quickly enough for that to be the case.

Banda had been throwing bullpen sessions and playing catch to build back up, and he’s excited to return.

“Banda is chomping at the bit,” Roberts said on Wednesday. “It’s clearly not tonight. And then, depending on how tonight goes, we’ll circle up and see if tomorrow is in play. But he’s ready to go.”

Banda is 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA across 46 appearances for the Dodgers this season. The 31-year-old has 50 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched while limiting opponents to a .247 batting average.

The Dodgers acquired Banda rom the Cleveland Guardians on May 17 in exchange for cash considerations. Since then, he has become a high-leverage option for the club.

Honeywell joins Brusdar Graterol in being put on the injured list before Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres. The roster move ends Honeywell’s season, but he potentially could return at some point during the playoffs.

Honeywell is 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in across 20 games (one start) for the Dodgers. They claimed him off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates in July.
