Roster churning continued Monday as Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Brock Stewart and Trayce Thompson, placed Brandon McCarthy on the 10-day disabled list with right knee tendinitis, and optioned Ross Stripling to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Thompson joins Dodgers for the second time, having appeared in three games during the first stint. He went hitless in eight at-bats, which was part of an expanded slump that followed Thompson to Oklahoma City.
Including time in the Majors and Triple-A, he opened the season a combined 0-for-38. His first hit, a double, came with Oklahoma City on April 21.
Thompson has slowly turned the corner, batting .244/.300/.451 with four doubles, two triples, three home runs and 15 RBI over 23 games in June.
Stewart returns a mere five days after he was optioned to OKC to create room on the Dodgers active roster for Brandon Morrow. Stewart struck out four en route to converting a three-inning save in his lone appearance with the Dodgers.
Tendinitis in McCarthy’s right knee forced him out of a start in late May, after six efficient innings. McCarthy previously indicated he’s managed and pitched through the issue for the majority of the year. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Monday he expects McCarthy to start the club once he’s eligible to be activated.
McCarthy’s DL stint does come one day after he lost control in the second inning and fired multiple pitches to the backstop. He wasn’t convinced it was a case of the yips, though did say he hoped previous experience in overcoming that trouble would be beneficial.
The Dodgers have now twice placed McCarthy on the disabled list this season. He missed a start and time in May with shoulder soreness after dislocating it during a workout exercise.
Stripling returns to Oklahoma City for a second time this year. Stripling was sent down June 16 with the hope time away from the Majors would allow him to “reset.”
The Dodgers recalled the right-hander last Friday when Chris Hatcher was put on the 10-day disabled list. Stripling last pitched Sunday in the series finale against the Colorado Rockies, allowing one run on three hits over two innings.
He’s 0-3 with a 4.03 ERA, 2.85 FIP and 1.42 WHIP in 22 games with the Dodgers.
