Dodgers Prospect River Ryan Placed On Minor League Injured List

3 Min Read

Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect River Ryan was scratched from a scheduled start for Triple-A Oklahoma City and instead placed on the Minor League seven-day injured list.

Ryan had been listed as the probable starter for OKC’s game against Albuquerque Isotopes as of Thursday morning. However, they updated their starter to be Logan Allen on Friday afternoon. Allen signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers after pitching for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic.

River Ryan’s injury

Oklahoma City did not make any formal announcement regarding Ryan being scratched from his start, nor details of an injury. According to Jack Harris of the California Post, the right-hander is experiencing some hamstring trouble.

The hamstring injury is an unfortunate bump in the road for Ryan as he returns to pitching after missing all of last year recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Ryan impressed during Spring Training but was fighting an uphill battle to make the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation. He was optioned to Minor League camp just over one week before the regular season began.

Although the 27-year-old went into camp feeling healthy and without any restrictions, the Dodgers were trying to determine his workload for the season and seemingly opted to save some of his innings by limiting him early.

Ryan has only made two starts for Oklahoma City so far this year and allowed two earned runs in both outings (five runs total). He struck out six over four innings in his season debut, but followed that by completing just three frames on April 11.

The Dodgers figure to call on Ryan at some point later in the year as they look to keep their group of starters feeling fresh heading into the postseason. Ryan went 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across four starts in 2024 before suffering his right elbow injury that ultimately required surgery.

A prolonged rehab process included adding 30 pounds of muscle to his frame in order to help pitch more easily at a high velocity.
