Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Magic Johnson was among those on hand at BMO Stadium on Saturday night to take in LAFC defeating the Houston Dynamo in the MLS Western Conference final.

With their 2-0 victory, the defending champion LAFC now are poised to take on the Columbus Crew in the 2023 MLS Cup match on Saturday. It’s going to be a 53rd game of what already has been the longest MLS season in history.

After LAFC defeated the Dynamo, Johnson posted photos of himself and wife Cookie, and a video of players celebrating their Western Conference title. Johnson is part of the LAFC ownership group and served as an honorary falconer at last year’s championship match.

LAFC is looking to become just the fourth team to win back-to-back championships, and the first to do so since the L.A. Galaxy accomplished the feat from 2011-2012.

The Dodgers and LAFC, which was founded in 2014, have enjoyed a growing connection over recent years.

In 2019, Fernando Valenzuela attended a special ceremony to present the Landon Donovan MVP trophy to LAFC forward Carlos Vela, who became the first Mexican player to win the MLS MVP.

The following year, Walker Buehler participated in a video with LAFC to promote safe coronavirus protocols during the pandemic. In addition, Nomar Garciaparra, Peter Guber, Tucker Kain, Lon Rosen and Jason Sugarman are members of the LAFC ownership group and have ties to the dodgers as well.

Magic Johnson part of NFL Commanders group

Johnson has been part of championship-winning teams with the Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks and LAFC, and he’s also a member of the Washington Commanders new ownership group.
