The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned Pedro Baez to Triple-A Oklahoma City in order to officially call up Caleb Ferguson and add him to the active roster for his MLB debut Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates. P.J. Conlon was designated for assignment to create room for Ferguson on the 40-man roster.

Word of Ferguson’s forthcoming arrival began to trickle out Monday morning. He joins the Dodgers after opening the season with Double-A Tulsa and spending time with Oklahoma City, just as Dennis Santana did before receiving the call for his debut.

Ferguson went a combined 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 10 starts (eight for the Drillers; two for OKC). He was 9-4 with a 2.87 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 122.1 innings pitched for across 25 games (24 starts) for High-A Rancho Cucamonga in the hitter-friendly California League last season.

Ferguson missed his entire senior season of high school after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He was selected by the Dodgers in the 38th round of the 2014 Draft and opted to sign instead of following through on a commitment to West Virginia.

Baez heads to Oklahoma City the day after allowing a single and issuing a walk in a scoreless inning of relief. He was aided by Kiké Hernandez turning an inning-ending double play by catching a deep fly ball and throwing out Adam Frazier on his attempt to advance to third base.

Baez is 2-3 with a 2.35 ERA, 3.37 FIP and 1.59 WHIp in 28 appearances for the Dodgers this season. He’s collected 35 strikeouts against 16 walks over 27.2 innings pitched in those games.
Baez was last optioned to the Minors in August 2016.
