Nick Tepesch was claimed off waivers on Monday afternoon by the Oakland Athletics, the club announced. Tepesch made a spot start for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday and was designated for assignment the following day.
The right-hander struggled in the outing, which was his first time pitching in the Majors since Sept. 26, 2014. He allowed five runs on seven hits, including one home run, had three strikeouts in four innings and suffered the loss.
Tepesch signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers on June 6 — two days after he was granted his release by the Texas Rangers.
He went 4-2 with a 4.11 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 31 strikeouts and 11 walks in 11 starts (65.2 innings) for Triple-A Round Rock. Tepesch was 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in three starts with Oklahoma City.
Prior to the start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tepesch was 9-17 with a 4.56 ERA, 4.66 FIP and 1.37 WHIP in 42 Major League games (39 starts)
Los Angeles could have optioned the 27 year old back to the Minors and kept him on their 40-man roster. But with Chris Taylor getting recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City, it left the Dodgers facing another roster move for Wednesday’s game.
The open slot on the 40-man roster is now expected to be filled by Brock Stewart, who will make his Major League debut on Wednesday.
