Los Angeles Dodgers free agent Clayton Kershaw was among the many star athletes and celebrities who went to see the Los Angeles Rams face the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.
It was the first time L.A. hosted a Super Bowl since 1993, so the NFL made sure to play up on the entertainment capital of the world theme, which included Dwayne Johnson igniting the crowd with a pregame speech and a halftime show featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar.
NFL Network also used the stars from L.A. to advertise for the Super Bowl and their “Gameday Morning” show, highlighting L.A. celebrities such as George Lopez, Danny Trejo and Drew Barrymore.
The network also released one with Kershaw where he highlighted the city’s iconic sports moments and legends that he posted to his Instagram:
Kershaw called L.A. a great city where iconic moments, people and teams have made their home and “where nothing is impossible with a lot of hard work and a little magic.”
Along with highlighting L.A. legends and heroes such as Kobe Bryant, Kirk Gibson and Marcus Allen, the video showed off the Griffith Observatory, Randy’s Donuts, the L.A. Coliseum, Dodger Stadium and other culturally significant areas.
With Kershaw in attendance, the Rams went on to win another title for the city with a 23-20 comeback. It is the third championship for the city since 2020, when the Dodgers and L.A. Lakers both won.
The Rams’ victory also inspired Trea Turner, calling on the Dodgers to “follow suit.”
Billie Jean King selected for Super Bowl coin toss
Dodgers part-owner Billie Jean King was on hand at Super Bowl LVI as she held the honor of carrying out the ceremonial coin toss. The Rams had the choice as the designated visiting team, but Matthew Stafford’s tails pick didn’t pan out.
Nevertheless, it marked an eighth consecutive year in which the team that lost the coin toss still won the Super Bowl as Stafford and the Rams staged another dramatic comeback in the fourth quarter.
As for King, she was joined on the field by team captains of the California School for the Deaf-Riverside Cubs, members of the High School Girls Flag League of Champions, and girls youth tackle football players from the Inglewood Chargers and Watts Rams.
The local California Honorary Captains were selected in recognition of utilizing their passion for sport to encourage a conversation on continuing to ensure equitable opportunities and inclusion are present to all athletes across all sports.
