The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Andrew Toles underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair the torn ACL in his right knee. The operation was performed by team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles.

Toles is expected to miss the remainder of the 2017 season. He sustained the injury on May 9 while attempting to make a catch on a slicing fly ball down the right-field line. Toles was unable to make the play, and the ground-rule double broke up Julio Urias’ no-hit bid in the seventh inning.

After a meteoric rise through the organization’s farm system last year, Toles was in his first full season with the Dodgers. He batted .271/.314/.458 with three doubles, five home runs and 15 RBI in 31 games (19 starts).

All of Toles’ starts came when the Dodgers faced a right-handed pitcher. While the injury brought his season to a grinding halt, the 24-year-old is taking the setback in stride.

His optimism is understandable considering Toles, once a top prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, was out of baseball entirely in 2015.

In 79 games with the Dodgers over parts of two seasons, Toles is batting .294/.341/.483 with 12 doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBI. Last season, he made stops with High-A Rancho Cucamonga, Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to an MLB debut in June.

Toles capped off his remarkable season by starting in left field for the Dodgers in Game 1 of the 2016 National League Division Series.
