The Los Angeles Dodgers concluded their wraparound series with the Miami Marlins by coming away with another win in extra innings. They hung on 3-2 in 10 innings on Monday night, winning three of the four games at loanDepot Park.
Michael Grove filled in for Tony Gonsolin, who was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm strain, and held the Marlins to just two runs over 4.2 innings. He exited with the game tied thanks to Will Smith’s two-run home run in the third inning.
Between Mookie Betts and Smith, a future Team USA roster member for the 2023 World Baseball Classic hit a homer each night during the series with the Marlins.
Smith’s home run initially provided the Dodgers with a lead, but the Marlins answered back in the fourth inning when Joey Gallo was unable to make a catch in deep right field and it resulted in a triple that eventually was cashed in on an RBI bloop single.

While the Dodgers lineup squandered opportunities as the game wore on, their bullpen did its part in keeping the game tied. Included in that was Craig Kimbrel retiring the side in order in the ninth inning to send the game to extras.
Trea Turner’s infield single to lead off the 10th gave him 1,000 career hits and put runners at the corners. Freddie Freeman then grounded into a force out to bring in what held as the game-winning run.
Although Kimbrel was not able to get through a second inning of work, Chris Martin bailed the Dodgers out by retiring both batters faced upon inheriting a bases-loaded jam. Martin became the eighth Dodgers pitcher to convert a save this season.
Dodgers eliminate Rockies from NL West
With their win, the Dodgers officially eliminated the Colorado Rockies from potentially winning the National League West. The Rockies are bound for a losing season, which would be the first of Kris Bryant’s career.
During an introductory press conference after signing a seven-year, $182 million contract, Bryant said he intended to keep his streak of finishing at least .500 alive with the Rockies.
