Dodgers Highlights: Freddie Freeman & Gavin Lux Home Runs Against Brewers; Mookie Betts Plays Catch With Fan, Chris Martin’s 4 Strikeouts In One Inning

The Los Angeles Dodgers became the first team to 80 wins this season behind a 4-0 shut out of the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.

Coming off back-to-back games in which he did not have a hit, Freddie Freeman’s solo home run in the first inning provided the Dodgers with an early lead. It remained 1-0 until Will Smith’s sacrifice fly brought Mookie Betts home in the fifth inning.

Smith’s fly ball wasn’t hit deep to left field, but Betts tested Christian Yelich’s arm and easily scored as the throw went up the third-base line.

Gavin Lux then provided more breathing room in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to the opposite field. The homer was Lux’s sixth this season but first against a left-hander.

Julio Urías wasn’t dominant and at times was hurt by a tight strike zone, but he managed to get through five scoreless innings. Urías worked out of small jams when the Brewers put the first two batters on in the first and third innings, and he didn’t retire the side in order until the fifth.

Urías was followed by spotless work from the Dodgers bullpen, which included Chris Martin collecting four strikeouts in one inning. The last Dodgers pitcher to accomplish the feat was Clayton Kershaw on June 11, 2021.

Betts plays catch with Dodgers fan

In the early innings of Monday’s game, Mookie Betts saw a Dodgers fan holding up a sign asking to play catch and he obliged to get warmed up. Earlier this season Betts gave his bat away to a young fan, and last year traded an autograph baseball to retrieve Cincinnati Reds rookie TJ Friedl’s first home run ball.
