The Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies played an atypical game at Coors Field through six innings, then traded home runs over the final three frames. The Dodgers emerged from the slugfest with an 8-5 victory.
With the game tied in the seventh inning, Joc Pederson led off with a pinch-hit home run off Rockies reliever Scott Oberg. The right-hander was then tagged for a pinch-hit homer by Max Muncy, which extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-1.
They became the first teammates in franchise history to combine for pinch-hit home runs in the same inning since Willie Crawford and Lee Lacy did so in July 23, 1975.
The L.A. lead short-lived, however, as Pedro Baez wilted in the high-leverage situation. A leadoff single, one-out walk and single loaded the bases. A cross-up between Baez and Yasmani Grandal resulted in a passed ball, bringing in a run.
Chris Iannetta then connected on a three-run homer to give the Rockies a 5-3 lead. But their bullpen failed to protect it. With two outs in the eighth, Seung-hwan Oh gave up a ground-rule double to Matt Kemp, followed by a game-tying home run to Cody Bellinger.
Chris Taylor then ambushed Wade Davis for a go-ahead home run on the first pitch of the ninth inning. Davis later surrendered a two-run homer to Brian Dozier and was removed without recording an out in the inning.
Per STATS, the Dodgers tied a National League record with five home runs hit from the seventh inning on.
